Finding True Happiness

Have you ever wondered if the happiness you seek is a fleeting escape or something deeper within, waiting to be discovered? Perhaps you find joy in pursuing hobbies, immersing yourself in fulfilling activities, or deriving satisfaction from acts of kindness—like holding the door open for someone or offering a heartfelt compliment.

Identifying what truly makes you happy is a fundamental step for anyone striving for a balanced life. However, this simple practice is often overlooked, leading us to push ourselves too hard and risk falling into burnout. I often meet people who seem disconnected from the concept of self-love. When I ask about their free time, they often mention mindlessly scrolling through social media—an activity that seems to fill time but leaves their soul unfulfilled.

Understanding what truly brings you happiness is the first step toward cultivating a life rich in fulfillment and meaning. Yet, many of us, including myself, have struggled to prioritize our own happiness, often getting lost in the needs of others or the distractions of the external world.

The Struggle with External Validation

Growing up in a toxic environment taught me to survive through manipulation and control—tools that shielded me from pain but left me feeling hollow inside. I vividly recall a moment when I was just five years old: my mother and grandmother had a physical altercation, leading to a police intervention. My father demanded that I lie to the cops and frame my grandmother, threatening punishment if I refused. Terrified and confused, I complied. This abusive cycle continued throughout my childhood, showing no signs of letting up.

The toxic patterns at home seeped into every aspect of my life. At school, I wore a mask, desperately seeking the acceptance I never found at home. This led me to bully others and undermine their uniqueness, mirroring my own inner turmoil. Frequent suspensions, fights with classmates, and a near expulsion were all signs of a child desperately seeking help.

My ability to form meaningful connections was stunted, leaving me isolated even when someone reached out. Frequent moves during my childhood prevented me from making and maintaining friendships. To cope, I adopted maladaptive survival mechanisms, seeking power and control over others. This behavior reinforced a false image of myself, driven by the need to be accepted. This facade was my way of coping with overwhelming challenges, a pattern many of us follow when faced with similar struggles

Have you ever felt the need to hide your true self just to fit in? What masks do you wear to protect yourself from judgment?

Throughout these experiences, a recurring pattern emerged: a relentless pursuit of external validation. Unable to love myself—a reflection of my parents' own struggles—I turned to escapism and distractions to numb the bottomless pit of despair within me. This coping mechanism continued into my adult life, where I chased external validation at the expense of my own fulfillment.

Can you relate to seeking validation outside yourself, perhaps in ways you didn’t fully recognize?

I was trapped in a belief of superiority—a facade masking my deep insecurity. This mask shattered when I finally admitted I didn’t have the answers. The pain of my mistakes made it clear: I was lost.

In my darkest moments, I surrendered to the truth—I had no idea how to live my life. The mask I clung to crumbled, leaving behind nothing but a hollow shell—an identity I could no longer recognize. I felt as if I was drowning in an endless abyss of darkness, unable to find my way to the surface.

Embracing Self-Love

Having hit rock bottom, a faint light pierced through the void—a beacon of hope guiding me toward healing. I realized the path ahead would be difficult, yet with each step, I started to understand the true essence of self-love. This meant shifting my focus inward and prioritizing my inner well-being over external distractions. Thus began a challenging yet transformative healing journey.

Over the past three years, I’ve grappled with old habits. Each time depression or a trigger emerged, the urge to escape or distract myself was intense. At times, I succumbed to those temptations. Yet, I always found the strength to rise again and keep moving forward, no matter how daunting the journey felt.

Despite the adversities, I found the strength to seek help and embark on a healing journey. This path led me to discover my true self, which profoundly transformed my life. My hobbies now focus on nurturing my soul, the people I surround myself with add genuine value, and, most importantly, I am driven by a deep sense of purpose. This purpose fuels my passion for creating content that helps others become their best selves, bringing me immense joy and fulfillment.

Ultimately, I learned how to build a foundation of unconditional self-love, which opened doors to exploring other areas of interest. I connected deeply with my spirituality, began engaging in spontaneous, wholesome activities, and most importantly, embraced solitude with peace and contentment. For most of my life, I was uncomfortable with being alone, relying on others to bring me happiness and joy. I depended on external validation and acceptance to feel loved, but through healing, I realized that this was an illusion I had been chasing.

Don’t get me wrong—having deep, meaningful connections with others is one of the beautiful gifts that self-love has bestowed upon me. However, I no longer rely on these connections to feel whole and complete. Paradoxically, this understanding has deepened and enriched my relationships, making them more genuine and fulfilling. Building a foundation of self-love has truly paved the way for an abundance of goodness in my life. As Brené Brown wisely said, “Owning our story and loving ourselves through that process is the bravest thing we’ll ever do.” This sentiment resonates deeply with my own journey of self-love and healing.

Reflecting on Your Journey

In summary, identifying what truly makes you happy, letting go of the need for external validation, and building a foundation of self-love are essential steps toward a fulfilling life. My journey has taught me that embracing who I am and prioritizing my well-being can transform not only my relationship with myself but also with others.

So, I ask you—how are you showing up for yourself today? What small step can you take right now to honor your own happiness and embark on a journey toward authentic self-love? Finding the courage to be introspective and understanding how you nurture yourself is essential. Being vulnerable with yourself can open doors to a more genuine and fulfilling life.

Self-love has become the cornerstone of my healing, reshaping every facet of my life. I encourage you to take a moment to reflect on how you are nurturing this crucial relationship with yourself. Embracing self-love can unlock a world of joy and fulfillment you might not have imagined.

If you’re ready to begin your own journey toward self-love, consider journaling your thoughts, seeking support from a therapist, or joining a community of like-minded individuals. Remember, each small step you take in nurturing yourself can lead to new levels of happiness and contentment.
